An annual subscription purchases access to the new subscriber content scheduled for publication in that subscription year. Access to the new subscriber content of that subscription year is secured forward until the 3rd quarter of the 6th year of publication when the subscriber content is released from behind the subscription barrier to become freely accessible to all users. In that way, access to purchased subscriber content is permanent.
A new annual subscription must be purchased in the following year for access to the following year's new subscriber content.
The annual subscription does not provide access to content belonging to the previous 4 years, unless that content was previously purchased. New subscribers can purchase access to the back years with a discount of 80%, 60%, 40%, and 20% respectively for these years.

The 4 hybrid journals are registered (2022) as 'Transformative Journals' under 'Plan S' requirements. In setting prices for the 2023 subscription content in our hybrid journals, we had to consider on the one hand high inflation, the threat of economic recession, and shrinking markets (resulting together from the serials crisis, the pandemic, the Ukraine War, and the energy crisis) forcing price increases, and on the other hand increased Open Access content paid via Article Processing Charges (APCs) forcing subscription content price decreases (to avoid so-called ‘double-dipping’). Given those conflicting forces, the only sustainable way forward was to keep subscription prices for 2023 stable at the 2022 levels.
